The Benefits of Herbal Tea

It will come as no surprise that our team at FreshGround LOVE coffee, but we also love switching things up from time to time and enjoying a cup of herbal tea as well! Along with a break from the norm, herbal teas can offer lots of health benefits and they come in a wide range of delicious tastes and flavours to help brighten your working day.

Technically speaking, herbal tea isn’t actually ‘tea’ because it’s not derived from the Camellia sinensis plant that produces all the usual black, green, white and oolong tea varieties. Herbal teas are quite simply beverages made from the infusion, or ‘tisane’, of any edible herb, spice, or plant material in hot water. They can be made from ingredients like bark, seeds, fruit, flowers, leaves, or roots all chosen for their health benefits or flavour. So why should you drink herbal tea at work? Here we tell you all about our top five and what makes them so good for you!

Stressed out about a deadline? Grab yourself a warming Chamomile tea which is widely known for its calming properties. Take five and relax with a cup as you enjoy its unique earthy and sweet taste. Chamomile tea is made from its dried daisy-like flowers and is full of health-boosting antioxidants. It is also used as a relaxation aid and recommended for insomniacs to help unwind and get a good night’s sleep.

The fresh taste of peppermint tea can be a great caffeine-free pick me up in the office. It’s believed to aid digestion and maintain stomach health so if you’re feeling a little full after a working lunch, this is the perfect choice of hot drink to avoid that afternoon slump! It is also thought to help relieve headaches and other stress-related symptoms which can happen at work, so before you reach for the paracetamol, try a soothing cup of peppermint tea first.

Ginger tea has a fragrant and vibrant aroma with an uplifting and spicy kick. It’s what’s known as a diaphoretic tea, meaning it will warm you from the inside and promote perspiration. Whilst a very subtle effect, it can help to cool the body and speed up the elimination of toxins from the body. Many experts believe that ginger can help relieve nausea so opt for this delicious tea if you’re feeling off-colour or even if you’ve had one too many the night before (!).

Fruit teas

Bursting with flavour, sweet scents and bright colours, fruity teas can be enjoyed hot or cold so they’re a great choice whatever the weather! There are hundreds of fruity flavours to choose from cranberry and raspberry to mango and strawberry, many providing a boost of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support overall health.

Green tea

Not a herbal tea as such, because it’s made from the Camellia sinensis plant, but it does offer a huge amount of health benefits like the teas above. Green tea is full of powerful antioxidants and may well increase energy levels, concentration and mood – exactly what you need to have a productive day in the office. Unlike many herbal teas, it contains caffeine so like coffee, it can also help to give you a little lift in the morning. Green tea has been used in medicine for thousands of years and although not conclusively proved it is said to aid weight loss, prevent illness, keep your heart healthy and even help you to stay looking young! Do you need any more reasons to try a cup of green tea?

While coffee will always be our number one, there’s no denying the merits of a cup of herbal tea! We stock only the very best teas from our friends at Newby and Twinings, so the question is, which ones will you and your colleagues opt for?
