Coffee in the News – from the Costa Controversy to Health Benefits

FreshGround | April 11, 2016

If you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’ve probably noticed a spike in the number of caffeine related stories appearing in the papers in recent weeks. From the scandal of Costa overcharging for their large coffee to the story that some high street brews contain more sugar than a can of Coke, the papers have been jam packed with coffee related news from all corners of the world.

Size matters

One of the biggest coffee related news stories of the last few months came from right here in the UK when an anonymous YouTuber filmed himself pouring a large cup of Costa coffee into a regular size cup. To the shock of coffee fans around the world, the large coffee fit perfectly inside the regular receptacle, showing that the coffee chain had been charging its customers extra money for no extra coffee.

Keeping it sweet

In other bad news for high street coffee fans, recent research has shown that some high street coffees contain as much as 25 teaspoons of sugar. The main offenders are brews which are topped up with caramel, cream, sugar and other sweeteners, with many cups containing more sugar than a can of soft drink.

Boosting health

Luckily for coffee lovers, the news from the caffeine wire hasn’t been all bad. A recently published report has shown that drinking coffee on a regular basis can actually help to reduce your chances of getting several lifestyle related diseases including diabetes – though you’ll need to make sure you avoid sugary high street brews to keep your chances of developing the illness to a minimum.

The research also pointed to a link between coffee and a reduced chance of liver disease and Parkinson’s disease. Though regular coffee consumption can’t guarantee you a long and healthy life, drinking coffee as part of a balanced diet could help you stay healthy, happy and active for longer.
