Top five coffee cocktails to try
Alex | September 26, 2022
Love coffee? Love cocktails? Combine your two favourite things and create some caffeinated coffee cocktails to enjoy after work. We’ve put together our top five favourites which are really easy to make and more importantly, delicious to drink. Let’s get started.
Espresso martini
What you’ll need:
- Espresso coffee
- Kahlúa coffee liqueur
- Vanilla flavoured vodka
- Ice
- Coffee beans
Method:
This is a super simple classic and a perfect party pick-me-up (try saying that after a few cocktails!) The Espresso Martini is rich, indulgent and creamy. To make, first pour yourself a quality espresso coffee and leave to cool. Then add a shot of Kahlúa coffee liqueur along with a shot of vodka. We like to use vanilla-flavoured vodka for extra sweetness but normal vodka is fine.
You’ll need a cocktail shaker for this one so add your coffee mix with ice and shake. You have to shake it fairly rigorously if you want to achieve a smooth and decadent frothy top. Then strain the liquid and pour it into a martini glass. To finish, top with two or three coffee beans for decoration.
Irish iced coffee
What you’ll need:
- Espresso coffee
- Irish whisky
- Vanilla syrup
- Ice
- Whipped cream
Method:
A twist on the classic Irish coffee which is served hot, this iced version is refreshing with an added hint of vanilla. To start, pour your shot of espresso and leave it to cool. In the meantime, you can whip your double cream up, or if you’d rather you can always use squirty cream from a can.
Add your cooled shot of coffee and one shot of Irish whisky into your cocktail shaker. To that, add just a dash of vanilla syrup and shake it all up. Pour into a tall or short tumbler and top with an indulgent layer of cream.
Caffeinated dark and stormy
What you’ll need:
- Dark rum
- Tequila
- Ginger beer
- Ice
- 2 tablespoons of coffee
Method:
Your traditional Dark and Stormy cocktail is a simple mix of dark rum and ginger beer finished with a twist of lime. This caffeinated longer version takes it to another level and is a good choice to serve at parties.
To make, start by adding one shot of dark rum and one shot of tequila to a highball glass. Add a generous amount of ice to your glass. Drop two tablespoons of cold espresso coffee and fill the glass with ginger beer all the way to the top. Stir with a cocktail shaker and you can add a sprig of mint and a slice of lime for decoration.
Espresso margarita
What you’ll need:
- Tequila
- Triple sec
- Espresso coffee
- Ice
- Kahlua
Method:
Who doesn’t like a Classic Margarita? Made with tequila, triple sec and mixed with lime juice, this Mexican cocktail has been around since the 1940s. You’ve probably not tried an espresso margarita though. It’s a rich and bittersweet drink that sounds like it shouldn’t work, but we promise that it does. Here’s how to make it.
Start by adding ice along with one shot of tequila to your cocktail shaker. Next, add half a shot of Kahlua and half a shot of triple sec. Finish by pouring in half a shot of cold espresso coffee and shake well. You need to shake it well to get a foamy consistency to form on the top once poured. Choose a martini-style cocktail glass and add a couple of coffee beans to finish.
Coffee old fashioned
What you’ll need:
- Whiskey
- Espresso coffee
- Orange bitters
- Ice
- Orange peel
Method:
This drink combines the smokiness of a good malt whiskey with the fresh citrus in the orange bitters and a bittersweet caffeine kick from the espresso. The coffee old fashioned is a smooth, well-balanced drink, perfect for sipping on a cool autumn evening.
Pour one shot of whiskey into a glass and add in half a shot of espresso coffee – make sure it’s cooled before adding. Pop in a handful of ice cubes and stir well. Then squeeze the oil out of your orange peel before adding that to your glass for garnish. This one is really easy to make and you don’t need much to make it.
