What’s the buzz around adding olive oil to your morning coffee?

Not long ago, you may remember that the ‘bulletproof coffee’ was trending across social media. This was where people added butter to their coffee in a bid to replace a carb-heavy breakfast. Fast forward to today and the chatter has moved to the latest wellness trend of adding olive oil in your coffee.
We know that coffee has numerous health benefits but can we make our morning cup of coffee even healthier with a spoonful of olive oil?
Firstly, this latest coffee trend seems to be inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of having a spoonful of olive oil in the morning. Of course, the morning is also when people are enjoying their first cup of coffee so people thought – why not take them together?
Another reason that the olive oil in coffee trend has grown in popularity is due to Starbucks’ launch of its Oleata range of beverages in May 2023. These drinks are made from arabica coffee and extra virgin olive oil. They describe them as ‘velvety smooth, deliciously lush experiences’. So the question is, would you add olive oil to coffee each morning? Let’s take a look at the pros before you give it a try!
Improved cognitive function
Caffeine is known for its ability to stimulate the brain, and combining it with the healthy fats found in olive oil could further help to enhance cognitive function. The healthy fats in olive oil are also a good source of energy and could help improve overall productivity for you and your office team.
No more hunger pangs
Another benefit of consuming healthy fats is that they help to satiate hunger pangs for longer periods of time. Adding olive oil to your coffee could help reduce cravings which could lead to reduced snacking between lunch and breaks. It can also support healthier eating habits for weight loss.
Good for your heart
Olive oil is naturally rich in polyphenols, which are plant-based compounds that are known to have heart-healthy benefits. Drinking olive oil in coffee might be an unconventional way to consume it, but it’s a great way to gain these benefits without cooking with it. Olive oil is full of various nutrients including vitamins A, D, E, and K which can all help boost our immune system as well. Generally, people with a higher immune system will get sick less often, resulting in less time off due to illness from your office team.
Anti-inflammatory benefits
Inflammation can have all kinds of negative impacts on our health, leading to various diseases like arthritis and heart disease. Olive oil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, so adding it to your morning coffee may reduce inflammation throughout the body to support you and your team’s overall health.
Taste
Whilst taste is a subjective thing, lots of people believe that adding olive oil to your office coffee can improve its taste. Olive oil is known to have a slightly bitter flavour that can complement the natural bitterness of coffee, giving it an extra depth of complexity. Adding a bit of honey or cinnamon can enhance the taste even further and provide natural sweetness without adding extra sugar.
Having said all that, the team at FreshGround tried out this latest trend with mixed results! We found it had the ‘Marmite effect’ where some of us either loved or hated it! Check out the results below. Let us know what you think in the comments.
