Why coffee is more popular than tea in the UK

Alex | November 1, 2023

Britain loves tea. You’ll find happy homes stacked high with tea bags — and the phrase ‘cuppa tea’ is everywhere. But for the first time ever: coffee is now more popular in the UK. Here’s why.

Coffee trumps tea: The stats

Today, 4% more people in the UK drink coffee more regularly than tea, according to the Statistica Global Consumer review. With 533 million packs of coffee sold, compared to 287 million packets of tea between March 2022 and March 2023.

So what’s brought on this UK coffee boom? We uncover why coffee is the nation’s new sweetheart of drinks, and what this means for workplaces looking to revitalise their staff with quality coffee.

There’s a coffee for everyone

Especially with the rise in plant based milks, coffee options and creativity keeps growing. Enter: espresso, americano, macchiato, cappuccino, latte, flat white, mocha, café au lait, Turkish coffee, cold brew, iced coffee, affogato, cortado, ristretto, and more! As well as fun coffee recipes like an Oreo’s O’s Oat Latte.

Reading this from your office? Then hopefully you’ll have a bean-to-cup machine to keep your tastebuds tingling through midweek afternoons. The coffee options add extra flavours to your working day. It’s good to mix it up.

Choice of coffee beans

While you might be used to your daily cup of Breakfast Tea, coffee-lovers have thousands of different beans to choose from when crafting their dark brew.

There are two main coffee bean categories: Arabica (most popular) and Robusta. These two species make up 99% of the world’s coffee production. Out of these… a whole world of delicious flavours awaits.

If you’re unsure where to start: FreshGround’s premium whole-bean range of Santa Barbara, Mount Elgon, Brazilian Santos, and Guatemala Antigua will spruce up any workplace.
